News
THE STORY BEGINS....

In 2004, a new "state of the art" operating room was completed at Lady Minto Hospital, together with an excellent Central Supply Room to provide sterilization of instruments as required by the new standards.

This project was funded by the Capital Region District ($1.1 million), the Vancouver Island health Authority ($1 million) and, at the request of the VIHA, $780,000 from the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation.

Since July 2008 this state of the art operating room sits empty and unused.

January 2011 some of the local doctors signed their names to a brief "letter".

"This is to inform the residents of Salt Spring Island that the Save our Surgery Committee (SOS) does not represent the undersigned physicians of Salt Spring Island."

Recent press regarding the surgery and community response to the doctor's letter.

NOTE: Some of the physicians who signed the letter were not in practice here when the operating room was successfully running at full capacity.   It is also interesting to note that some of the doctors are recent recruits to the community (after the surgical closure) and work at the new Kings Lane Clinic (owned Dr. Barclay, Lady Minto Hospital's Chief of Medical Staff), which advertises services that used to be done in the $3 mil state of surgical suite.

Richard Crowe's comments might sound OK for those who don't know the reason for the comparatively low numbers but they are because VIHA restricted the hours in which the surgeon could do elective surgery to only two half days a week.

HOW CAN WE TRUST VIHA PROMISES? THEIR ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS - RECENT CUTS TO MENTAL HEALTH/ADDICTION SERVICES AND SERVICES TO SENIORS.

At the June 14, 2010 public "Presentation" of the Salt Spring Island Health Services Review, Grant Hollett, VIHA Director, Planning and Community Engagement stated:

"In regard to residents' questioning whether suggested improvements to mental health and seniors services would ever be implemented, Hollett said VIHA has money ready to go into the review's short-term recommendations immediately."

In light of cuts VIHA has made in recent months, CAN WE TRUST THIS STATEMENT?
